Role Purpose

The Assistant Key Account Manager – Modern Trade is responsible for supporting the growth and profitability of Akoma Foods within modern trade accounts by managing customer relationships, ensuring excellent retail execution, driving product availability, and coordinating promotional activities. The role works closely with key retail partners to maximize sales, strengthen brand visibility, and ensure consistent execution of commercial agreements.

The role requires the ability to independently manage assigned accounts, identify commercial opportunities, monitor account performance, and execute growth initiatives while providing strategic insights and updates to the Senior Key Account Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, secure, and execute in-store activations (sampling and promoter deployment) across modern trade partners.
  • Independently manage assigned retail accounts, serving as the primary day-to-day contact for retailers and ensuring smooth execution of commercial activities.
  • Monitor shelf placement, planogram compliance, pricing, and stock availability at partner outlets; resolve out-of-stock or poor-visibility issues quickly.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with store managers, mall administrators, and key retail partners to secure and protect prime shelf space.
  • Develop and execute account-specific sales improvement initiatives to increase product sell-through, customer conversion, and revenue growth.
  • Drive the Listing of SKUS and support the successful onboarding of new products across assigned modern trade outlets
  • Prepare clear, timely performance reports (using spreadsheets/dashboards) for reviews.
  • Identify new trade opportunities — malls.
  • Ensure all promotional materials, branding, and product presentation meet Akoma’s quality and consistency standards.
  • Achieve monthly, quarterly and annual targets.
  • Monitor competitor activities and market trends in outlets.
  • Monitor account performance and identify opportunities to increase sales, improve product placement, and expand distribution.
  • Support negotiations with retail partners regarding product listings, promotions, displays, and commercial opportunities.
  • Monitor sales trends, customer demand, and account performance to recommend actions that improve revenue growth.
  • Conduct regular outlet audits to assess compliance with agreed merchandising standards and promotional execution.
  • Ensure proper stock rotation, expiry management, and adherence to FIFO principles within assigned outlets.
  • Evaluate promotional effectiveness and provide post-activation reports, insights, and recommendations.
  • Gather insights into shopper behaviour, category trends, and retail performance to support commercial decision-making.
  • Provide regular updates to the Key Account Manager on account challenges, opportunities, and recommended actions.
  • Support the Key Account Manager in strategic initiatives while independently managing assigned operational and commercial responsibilities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Business Administration, Sales, Commerce, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 4–5 years’ experience in FMCG sales, key account management.
  • Experience in handling modern trade outlets is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with FMCG brands, distributors, or consumer goods companies will be an advantage.
  • Proven experience managing customer accounts, achieving sales targets, negotiating with retail partners, and executing commercial growth initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of FMCG sales operations, key account management, and retail channel management.
  • Strong relationship management, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to independently manage assigned accounts and deliver commercial results.
  • Good understanding of merchandising, category management, trade promotions, and shopper marketing principles.
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and sales reporting tools.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and influencing skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to identify and pursue sales opportunities.
  • Good planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Customer-focused with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple accounts, priorities, and deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to travel frequently for outlet visits.
